There are few things as Canadian as the imagery of a wild Canada Goose, with its distinctive black head and white chinstrap, flying above a cold Canadian landscape. The Canada Goose is more than merely an icon of Canada - it also produces one of the finest, rarest downs in the world.
We have named our Canada Goose down "James Bay" - a nod to the inlet nestled between Quebec and Ontario, where thousands of geese flock every year. The rocky rolling coasts and low-lying islands provide a breeding ground and major migratory pathway for the wild Canada Goose.
Thanks to Canada's Migratory Bird Act, the Canada Goose is flourishing in its native habitat; the geese can only be hunted under license from the Canadian Government.
In the cold, rocky northeast of Canada, the First Nations people's traditional hunting practices are still alive. They hunt the wild Canada Goose, feeding and supporting their communities with its bounty. The First Nations communities continue traditions of honoring nature and ensure that every part of the goose is used: including the down. They hand collect the down and send it to be cleaned in one of the world's most respected facilities here in Canada and then it is meticulously hand sorted.
Because of the unique way that James Bay down is collected, there is even less of it available each year than Eiderdown!
As for Quality, James Bay down is second only to Eiderdown. Like down from the wild Canadian Eider ducks, James Bay down is incredibly soft, lightweight and resilient. We would go so far as to say that it is the finest goose down in the world.
Canada Goose down boasts Eiderdown-like cling. This unique property causes the down clusters to cling to one another, linking the down clusters and creating a uniform layer of warmth atop the sleeper.
James Bay down has a luxurious loft value of 700, but, because of its incredible cling, James Bay down insulates at the equivalent of a 900+ loft down.
For each James Bay product that St. Genève produces, a donation is made towards the continued preservation of waterfowl and their natural habitat.
